LEAP SECOND Countdown! (Dec 31, 2016 23:59:60 UTC)

[LINK to LIVE New Year Eve TRACKING MAP]

Build Your Own Free Countdown Timer
Every now and then a leap second is added to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to synchronize clocks worldwide with the Earth's ever slowing rotation.
Atomic clocks are slightly too accurate.
The reason we have to add a second now and then is that Earth's rotation around its own axis is gradually slowing down, although very slowly.
How Often Are Leap Seconds Added?
Before the first leap second was added in 1972, UTC was 10 seconds behind Atomic Time.
So far, a total of 26 leap seconds have been added.
This means that the Earth has slowed down an additional 26 seconds compared to atomic time since then.
However, this does NOT mean that the days are 26 seconds longer nowadays.
The only difference is that the days a leap second was added had 86,401 seconds instead of the usual 86,400 seconds.
The next leap second will be added on December 31, 2016 at 23:59:60 UTC.
The difference between UTC and International Atomic Time (TAI) will then increase from the current 36 seconds to 37 seconds.

"Purrrfect cruising weather!"

(The State of Mind)
Hey, LW.
Pirate Radio Dave [KD7PWB]
said he wanted to send you a few pix.
He’s currently helping Chris [AC7AR] with the last of the antenna games.
--------
The first few pictures are from a few years ago.
Gomez was not so happy about the snow this time as he was when he was younger.
The last boat picture is this year’s lights - Go Hawks!
The last photo is the kids showing that they can “not get into trouble”.
Gomez is on the left, Schroeder on the right.

Sam [KD7PWA]

Thanks for sharing your State of Mind with us!

I've had several requests to post information about the Santa Claus Net
tomorrow afternoon (Sunday), so here it is.

The net will NOT be on the Western Intertie Network, as far as I know.
You must have access to a steerable IRLP or Allstar or Echolink node
(which a lot of you do). The net start times are:

Hawaii Time Zone - 1 PM
Alaska Time Zone - 2 PM
Pacific Time Zone - 3 PM
Mountain Time Zone - 4 PM
Central Time Zone - 5 PM
Eastern Time Zone - 6 PM

Connections:
IRLP - 9109
Allstar - 27133 or 29332
Echolink - 9191 or WL7LP - R

The net will probably run for 90 minutes to 2 hours and children of all
ages are welcome, but please give priority to the real young ones.

Thanks,
Steve [N5ZUA]

Kevin [KG7KNS] -- Seal Raft Spotted Again (Nov 29, 2016)

Every year this time the seals gather in a raft...
young males without mates...big fraternity.
It is always in this same spot...between Ivar's and ferries.

And seals DO NOT hit 40 underwater...
think it is reported at 18mph...
fast enough to get out of marine traffic.

Thanks for the Seal Raft Report, Kevin!

SPECIAL NOTICE for tonight's 9 O'Clock Net (Dec 05, 2016)

Thank you for your check in!
++ Special Instructions for checking in ++
++ on tonight's 9 PM O'Clock Net ++
(for December 5, 2016)
I was contacted by Mark Sheppard from the Seattle EOC,
who asked if we could encourage
the 9 o'clock net check-ins
to include their location and
some commentary on the weather conditions in their area.

The EOC is going to be manned and they will be monitoring the PSRG repeater.

Regards,  -Doug- [KD7DK], President PSRG
There is another chance for snow tonight over Northwest Washington.
Also, tonight through Thursday, very cold conditions are expected throughout Western Washington with overnight temperatures in the 20s and lower 30s and daytime temperatures only above freezing for a few hours each day.
Drivers should use caution as roadways may be icy.
As always, visit weather.gov/seattle for the latest forecasts.
