DETAILED INFORMATION:
    The Radio Licensing classes start this Saturday, November 4 and 11, 2017.
    Here is some more information about the radio class:
        The Technician Class is the first class you should take and it will be in the room downstairs on the main floor.
        The entrance is on the south west corner of the building, on 24th Avenue.
        There is also a General Licensing Class in a different room.

1    LOCATION:    The Technician class will be in south room and the General Class, which is for people who have a license, is in the north room.

Both classes are from 9 AM to 5 PM both days at

PC Center
2363 NW 80th Street
Seattle, WA 98117

2    PARKING:  Parking is on the west and south sides of the building.  Street parking is free. There is a Memorial Service at the church, so please carpool if you can.
3    LUNCH:    There will be an hour for lunch.  You can bring your lunch it you want and eat in the class rooms  There are also breaks throughout the day,
4    HANDOUTS:    There will be 10 take home quizzes and a Illustration booklet with 160 illustrations from the training slides.  Several different instructors will answer your questions.
5    FRN:    Be sure to go to the FCC ULS web site and get your FRN (Federal Registration Number),

The Federal law requires the FCC to have your Social Security Number (SSN) to start your license data file.
You can do this at their web site and then you will not have to put your SSN on the official NCVEC 605 License Application Form., at the test. We would rather not see your SSN, either
The licensing process will go quicker if you get you FRN before the test.  Go to the FCC ULS site: http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home
If you have a Novice license or an expired license, then you need to bring a copy of your license to the test session on the second day.

6    TEST INFORMATION:    The Test is a Closed Book test.  Training material can be placed on the floor,

    a)    You will need a FRN or your Social Security Number.  We would rather not see your SSN, so please get your FRN from the FCC before the second day.
    b)    You will need a photo ID.  A government identification is preferred.
    c)    $15 will be collected at the beginning of the test.  Cash or a check is preferred
    d)    Bring a pen for the official application and a pencil for the test score sheet.
    e)    Bring a simple calculator.  You can not use your cell phone or I-PAD.
    f)     Some calculators, pens and pencils are available for the test

7    RESULTS:    The test take about an half an hour  It is immediately graded.and you will know the results before you leave.
        Please raise your hand when you are finished and a runner will pick up your test package and take it to the graders.

    a)    After you finish the Technician test you can take the General. Just ask a runner.
    b)    The $15 allows you to take one Technician test and one General test and one Extra test.  Most students take both the Technician test and General test.
    c)    If one fails a Technician test, then another Technician test would cost $15.
    d)    Most of the time the test is finished in 1 1/2 hours
    e)    Licenses appear in the FCC ULS database in about 10 days.  The training team will send you an email when your license appears.

Jamboree-on-the-Air

Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is the largest Scouting event in the world. It is held annually the third full weekend in October. JOTA uses amateur radio to link Scouts and hams around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. This jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby amateur radio operator's ham shack. Many times you can find the hams will come to you by setting up a station at your Scout camporee, at the park down the block, or perhaps at a ham shack already set up at your council’s camp.

Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers, including girls. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication may also be taking place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio), or communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater). The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies. The stations you’ll be communicating with can be across town, across the country, or even around the world! The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2016 JOTA had nearly 1.3 million Scout participants from more than 30,000 locations, and reached 156 countries.
When Is It?
Jamboree-on-the-Air is held the third weekend in October. There are no official hours, so you have the whole weekend to make JOTA contacts. The event officially starts Friday evening during the JOTA Jump Start and runs through Sunday evening.

As we have in the past, the Woodinville ARES Group (WG7BSA) will run a “Jamboree On The Air” (JOTA) site at the North Seattle College this year. The site is part of the Chief Seattle Council’s Program & Training Conference, check out: http://www.seattlebsa.org/ptc-all and search for “JOTA” . We will be having a fox hunt, several sessions on “Ham Radio and Scouting” and a licensing exam session for Scouts to get their ham ticket. We will also have radio room with several HF and VHF/UHF GOTA stations to help the Scouts make contacts worldwide.
 
Our plans are to use the PSRG repeater for making local analog FM contacts given its wide reach throughout the general Seattle area. We also hope to make use of IRLP and Echolink so you might see linkages come and go throughout the day. We will be on the air intermittently between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, October 21^st. If available, please monitor the repeater and help us by logging a contact with a Scout.
 
In addition to talking to a Scout over the Queen Anne Hill repeater, if you are able to come to the North Seattle College between 1pm and 2pm, we have a particular need for Morse code knowledgeable hams to assist us in one of our classes. BSA has a “Morse Code Interpreter’s Strip” that is earned by Scouts by demonstrating a Morse code proficiency at 5 wpm. We have over 20 scouts enrolled in the 1pm-2pm class for them to learn Morse code to earn their Interpreter’s Strip – with just one instructor. We’d like to have at least 3 or 4 additional helpers that can work with the Scouts one-on-one. If you know code and can help out at North Seattle College, please drop an email to Horace Hamby, N7DRW (hhamby@msn.com) and offer your assistance.

We were informed yesterday by Rebecca Hall (KJ7NNO),

that her brother Michael Hall - KJ7WC, had passed away on Friday.

I don't have any details right now,

but Rebecca knows how to contact the PSRG board

once more is available to share.

Michael was a very active member of PSRG

and the local amateur radio community,

and a net host of the 9 o'clock net and he will be sorely missed.
