You are invited to the 
USGS-Cascades Volcano Observatory 
Open House on Saturday, May 2

 

May 18th marks the 35th anniversary of the 
eruption of Mount St. Helens.
In commemoration, 
the U.S. Geological Survey–Cascades Volcano Observatory
opens its doors to the news media and public on
Saturday, May 2, 2015 (10:00 a.m -- 5:00 p.m.)
for a one-day open house.

    Visitors can talk to volcanologists about their research, learn about the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, and watch videos of the changes that have occurred inside the crater over the past 35 years.
    Scientists will demonstrate monitoring equipment such as thermal imaging, earthquake detection, and how to track ground deformation by satellite.
    See what a remote volcano monitoring station looks like and watch a scientific “spider” do its job.
    A robotic arm will be operating in the sediment laboratory and scientists will be on hand to talk about how they collect and process sediments, and how rivers respond to dam removal.     Learn more about landslides and volcanic hazards including whether or not you live in a hazard zone.
    There will be hands-on science activities and you can have your picture taken in front of a green screen that places you in the crater of an exploding volcano.  Continuing a USGS–CVO open house tradition, visitors are invited to bring their mystery rock to be identified by a geologist.

50 Years Ago -- Earthquake rattles Western WA on April 29, 1965

Unstable Ground

  Fifty years ago this week, on April 29, 1965, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Western Washington, causing seven deaths -- three from falling debris, and four from heart failure.
  Many buildings were damaged throughout the region, including the State Capitol Building, the Fisher Flouring Mills, and UW's Meany Hall -- built as an auditorium for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition -- which had to be demolished. Other consequences were minor, such as a strange incident in Kirkland.

  The quake was one of the largest to hit the region since 1700, when a massive temblor created a tsunami that traveled to Japan. An earthquake in 1872 was later estimated to be 7.3 or 7.4 magnitude, and a magnitude 7.1 shaker struck in 1949, but lesser quakes have also rattled the state.
  A magnitude 5.5 quake on April 29, 1945, knocked chunks off of Mount Si near North Bend, and a magnitude 6.3 quake damaged buildings in Seattle's industrial area less than a year later.

  During the half century since the 1965 quake, only one Pacific Northwest temblor was larger -- the Nisqually quake of 2001, which registered at 6.8 on the Richter Scale. 
  Fortunately this quake was deeper than the 1965 quake and it caused fewer deaths and less damage, although the repair bills still surpassed $1 billion. 
  And given what we know about fault zones in the region, it's only a matter of time until the next big one strikes.

Neat little "economy" HF rig. One little issue, though.

This (below) is apparently a common issue with this thing:

The "rubber" on the knob had deteriorated into a disgusting goo.  Fortunately, I have a ten year old who doesn't play with a bunch of his old toys any more:

There were 32 in the test session, and one was a Tech Plus to General upgrade.
We have 26 New Amateurs -- with one also passing his General test.
Two passed all three test to be come Extras.
One of the New Extras missed on his Technician and missed one on his General and aced the Extra.
The other New Extra missed the Extra class and self-studied to pass all three test.

  Joe Fell from a Moving Sling, while he was Being treated for a Detached Retina.   

  Broke his right Upper Leg bone,.. the Femur ?
    Sylvia and I went and Saw Joe St Aubin, K7EQ, over at Shoreline Health & Rehabilitation Center (2818 NE 145th Room 115)
     He is Doing good, Has Already had Laser Surgery to Fix the Detached retina, But with Joe’s Brittle Bones, He’s not going to be able to get out for 60 to 90 Days,  that’s two to Three Months...
     He is in Good Spirits and is getting good care... But I think he could use a Visit or a Call...
    He says if you call, leave him a Message, and he can hear it coming in,,... then he will call for a Nurse to get you back on the phone,... 
    And he says that’s fine too...

Barry & LW --
    I ran into Joe on the bus coming home tonight. He asked me to pass this along, and to say you could do the same.
    As you may know (I didn't) he went in for emergency eye surgery to correct a detached retina.
    While in the hospital a caregiver dropped him moving him between his chair and the bed and broke his leg.
    He is now at Shoreline Health & Rehabilitation Center, in room 115.
    I'm afraid I didn't ask him how long he thought he'd be there.
    He has  a landline, but no cell, email, or radio access.
    He said to say that visitors are welcome.

SATURDAY -- April 25, 2015 VE Help Needed for Federal Way Technician Class The  Technician class will be finishing tomorrow on Saturday April 25, 2015. There were 34 in the first day. We will need a few more VEs. The test will start after 3 PM, upstair on the west side of the building at the: Federal Way Masonic Hall 1700 South 340th Street Federal Way  WA  98003  DIRECTIONS: Approach South 340th from the south.
