LW Abel (K7LWA)

1950 - 2018

Memorial Service to be held Saturday July 21st, 2018 @ 2 pm (14:00 hours)
3438 S. 148th St., Tukwila

From Mark Gedosch notes of 6/20/18 as read over the 21:00 hour net.

Let me begin by making a call
K7LWA
K7LWA
Kilo Seven Lima Whiskey Alfa
Silent Key

I am sure many have noticed the absence of LW on the net the last couple of months and his cheerful banter, helpful advice, and boundless enthusiasm for amateur radio. He didn’t want to trouble anyone with the news of the aggressive cancer which silenced his voice yesterday at 1:12 PM local time.

He was born in 1950 in Hershey Pennsylvania and knew a lot about chocolate. Some of you may know he has a twin sister Beth. He lived and worked in many places including Pennsylvania, Carson City, Reno, Irvine, and a stint in England. He was working in programming, IT, and the phone product support line for the Pick program when he met Shelley, KF7TBA, in 1992 and ended up moving to Seattle in 2001.

LW had an insatiable curiosity and a keen mind for science, not just radio and computers, but geology, evolution, biology and meteorology. An avid history buff he had an encyclopedic knowledge of the civil war. He was also a master gardener.

Shelley and LW traveled widely visiting battle grounds, chasing eclipses, collecting rocks, and buying wines from vintners.

LW was my Elmer and was the sole reason my wife Sue, KI7RXI, and I made it on the air.

We have lost a great man, a great mind, a kind and gentle spirit, a friend, a brother, and a partner. 73 and safe travels through the universe LW.

Also on March 17: Winlink Training by Seattle ACS

Here is the ACS Announcement:

In order to avoid a head-on conflict with PSRG meeting and training on March 17th, Seattle ACS has changed a previously-scheduled
Winlink training session to Saturday MORNING
from 9 am to Noon (instead of Saturday afternoon).
The training will be at South Seattle College, Olympic Hall, room 101 (where ACS normally meets).

This is intended to be hands-on training with as much one-on-one help as possible.  Based on the ACS poll that was sent out, we have about 9 people who are available to help, and about 19 people who want help. That’s pretty good, about a 2 to 1 ratio.

If you are coming for help YOU need to do the following:

  1. Bring your radio, laptop, and whatever other equipment that is meant to be part of your Winlink setup to the class, ready to use. This is hands on, not lecture.
  2. Before you come, go to the following two links from last years comm Academy and review Scott Curie’s excellent classes on Winlink. Follow those classes as much as you can on your own before the 17th to allow the absolute best use of the limited time we have on the 17th.

Other opportunities for help.

The following opportunities are also available for Winlink help, and you are encouraged to utilize these as much as you can.

  1. Every Monday night during our Monday Night ACS net you can go to North Seattle College to our radio room, and get help with Winlink. Dave Wilma is the contact for getting to the radio room.
  2. We (various of us) can offer one-on-one remote control help through an audio/video chat room where you can share your screen so we can see it, and do a lot to get you going that way. The challenge is finding the right person to help and matching them up with you and finding a time that works for both people. Despite the “hassle”, this is still a powerful tool for us to use. Please email acs-leadership@seattleacs.org if you would like to try and schedule one of these sessions.

We look forward to seeing as many people as possible on March 17th, and welcome PSRG members who are not involved with ACS to participate if they so desire.
The next PSRG Board meeting is on April 21, 2018 at 1:30 PM. (The meeting has been postponed from its regular date to avoid conflict with the Communications Academy.)
PSRG meetings are at the
Salmon Bay Cafe
5109 Shilshole Ave NW
Seattle

Rich [K7RCH] -- Pt Reyes: Marine Radio Historical Society (Jan 15, 2018)

I am attaching several photos of the Pt. Reyes radio site.
I’ll have more when I have time to edit them
but I may just put them on my own blog.

I suggest saying:
“Check out Rich’s blog,
The Further Adventures of Elusive Richard
in a few days for more photos and information.”
(Right now: Marconi Coast Station KPH)
Meanwhile, here is some explanation of the photos
attached to use for captions.
9245: Richard Dillman, W6AWO, co-founder of the Marine Radio Historical Society, looking at the main operating position.
9246: A better shot of the main operating position.
9252: Another operating position (there are 6 altogether)
next to a carousel used to hold messages queued to be sent.
9257: In the “Treasure Room,” an early RCA rig.
9271: Part of the antenna
9272: Outside of the building. Note, this is the Receive site. The transmitters are located several miles away and are operated remotely.
